ABOUT US

Mooroobie Angus & Mooroobie Wagyu

Our Properties

Mooroobie is located 5kms south east of Goondiwindi adjoining the Macintyre River in QLD, part of the property has been in the Ward family since 1902.

In 2017 an additional property was purchased being "Prestbury" located between Felton and Southbrook. Lindsay and Helen Ward established Mooroobie Angus in 1995 and Mooroobie Wagyu in 2016. In addition to the Angus and Wagyu studs the family grow dryland and irrigated grain and forage crops.

About Our Studs

Angus - We currently join approximately 200 stud Angus cows annually through mostly AI and ET programs. A commercial herd also enables progeny from Mooroobie bulls to be observed by way of temperament and ‘doing ability’ in the paddock/feedlot along with retail beef yield, marbling and fat scores at slaughter. We believe it is important to assess progeny performance from our bulls as this is what our customers are looking for.

Wagyu – In 2016 we decided to diversify into Wagyu. This decision was partially driven by the increased demand for Wagyu bulls and Wagyu x Angus F1 calves. Wagyu bulls are also highly fertile and offer calving ease which are both important attributes for first calf heifers. Wagyu Bulls are now used over our commercial Angus heifers to produce F1 calves.

Breed Traits

Bull selection and future genetics is driven by the desire to continually improve on the following characteristics;

• Temperament
• Maternal traits - calving ease and milk
• Structure - feet, hind legs and scrotal circumference and udders in cows
• Fertility & Longevity - ability to calve each year
• Growth - 200, 400 and 600day
• Carcass traits - retail beef yield, marbling and fat scores.

Animal Husbandry

Ease of management along with ensuring bulls are mature and ready for work in July/August, we run a very tight mating program in September. Cows are supplemented with a light silage/grain mix before, during and after mating to ensure optimal fertility. Pregnancy testing is done 12 weeks after joining and any cow not pregnant is sold.

Calving takes place in May when all calves are tagged, vaccinated and weighed at birth. Cows and calves are then placed onto forage oats.
Calves are weaned in November which includes feeding a silage/grain mix prior to placing on forage sorghum or pasture.

We take great pride in preparing our bulls in a forward condition, ready to work. The bulls are mostly grown and fattened on grass and forage crops however depending on the season we do supplement our bulls with a silage/grain mix. Fertility is a key quality in our bulls therefore we ensure that all bulls are semen tested prior to sale.
